XR-85 (Imperial Droid Tank)
The XR-85, also known as the siege droid tank, is one of the automated combat vehicles appearing in the Star Wars Expanded Universe—now known as Legends. Unlike conventional crewed tanks, this vehicle was designed to operate without an organic crew, utilizing automated systems to navigate, identify targets, and engage enemy forces. Its concept aligned with the military doctrine of the Galactic Empire, which sought to leverage technological superiority, large-scale industrial production, and firepower to crush resistance on subjugated worlds
The XR-85 was manufactured by Arakyd Industries, a company specializing in military technology and droids that also produced machines such as the Viper probe droid. Although its development is attributed to Arakyd engineers, Legends sources do not conclusively identify a specific individual designer. Early prototypes were relatively small but proved too costly for mass production. Later, during Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaigns, the design was refined to reduce costs and improve industrial viability. The final versions reached approximately 32 meters in length and over 30 meters in height, surpassing the Imperial AT-AT walkers in size.
In terms of performance, the XR-85 was a true tracked heavy artillery platform, capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. Its armament included a heavy particle cannon, two light turbolasers, four dual heavy repeating blasters, and a rear-facing DF.9 laser cannon. Its main cannon could destroy bunkers at ranges of up to five kilometers, making it a formidable threat to fortifications and ground units. Furthermore, its integrated droid brain allowed it to engage in combat without risking organic crews. Later versions incorporated a processor core based on technology stolen from R7 astromech droids, which improved their autonomy and initiative. However, their massive silhouette and high initial cost were significant drawbacks.
Notable engagements involving these units include operations against the Rebel ship *Nonnah* around 0 ABY and the defense of the Fest weapons research facility, where XR-85 units clashed with Rogue Squadron. In the latter engagement, Rebel forces destroyed numerous tanks, demonstrating that their firepower did not guarantee victory against mobile, tactically savvy enemies. Years later, these vehicles saw combat on Coruscant during the Imperial Civil War, as the Empire attempted to regain control of the galactic capital. They were also deployed during Operation Shadow Hand, associated with Palpatine's Dark Empire.
The significance of the XR-85 in *Legends* lies in how it represents the Empire's adaptation following the collapse of its traditional military structure. After Palpatine's death at Endor, Imperial factions faced a loss of resources, training facilities, and skilled personnel. Automation offered a practical solution: deploying combat vehicles without relying on large numbers of experienced soldiers. The XR-85 first appeared in the 1991 *Dark Empire* comic series and later in the 1998 video game *Star Wars: Rogue Squadron*. Although it never achieved the popularity of the AT-AT, it serves as an interesting example of how the Expanded Universe explored the Empire's technological and military evolution. Its history reflects a paradox: a war machine designed to compensate for Imperial weakness ultimately came to symbolize a declining regime's reliance on its own weaponry.
