PH 2000 (German Self Propelled Gun)
Among its most important technical specifications is its 155mm Rheinmetall L52 gun, compatible with standard NATO ammunition. The vehicle weighs approximately 55 to 57 tons, has a top speed exceeding 60 km/h, and a range of nearly 420 km. It can carry up to 60 projectiles and 288 modular charges, and features an automatic loading system that allows it to fire three projectiles in less than ten seconds and achieve bursts of up to ten rounds per minute. Its range varies depending on the type of ammunition, reaching over 50 km with assisted projectiles.
The primary purpose of the PzH 2000 is to provide long-range indirect fire support to ground forces. It was designed to destroy enemy positions, armored vehicles, command centers, and fortifications from long distances, while protecting the crew thanks to its armor and NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) defense systems. Furthermore, its advanced fire control and navigation system allows it to operate with high precision and execute modern tactics such as Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI), where several projectiles fired with different trajectories impact the target simultaneously.
In military performance, the PzH 2000 has demonstrated great effectiveness in real-world operations, especially during the war in Afghanistan, where it was used by German and Dutch forces. There, it gained a reputation for its accuracy and long-range support capabilities, becoming known as "the long arm of ISAF." More recently, the system has been employed in the war in Ukraine, where it has shown significant firepower against Russian positions. Although its high rate of fire can lead to accelerated barrel wear with intensive use, it continues to be considered one of the most effective and modern self-propelled howitzers in service.
Currently, the PzH 2000 is used by several countries besides Germany. Major operators include Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Croatia, Lithuania, Qatar, Hungary, and Ukraine. More than 360 units have been manufactured and exported, solidifying the PzH 2000 as one of the most important self-propelled artillery systems in service today.
